Peppermint Patterns Samford Set: An Adventure and Review in floral.

Twin Set guys, that's what I'm talking about

If you’re not aware of Peppermint Magazine, well then hold onto your hats. This Australian based publication releases a fresh mag, filled with sew worthy, socially conscious articles quarterly.

In their own words, ‘WE TELL THE STORIES OF PEOPLE DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD’.

So last quarter, the people of Peppermint collaborated with Lindsey Rae of Sew to Grow. Bringing us lay people the Samford Set, a free pattern provided with the purchase of the mag. (you may also purchase the pattern from Peppermint Magazine website)

Now I hot tailed it to the newsagent and very quickly whipped up the Samford top in a black and white check cotton that I’d recently purchased from Fibresmiths’ de-stash.

I used the Tula Pants by Papercut Pattern for these shorts.

I purchased and used said check fabric straight up… that never happens, well for me that is, normally the fabric and patterns languish in my stash.

The top was sorted, I made the size I with my measurements (B:110cm, W:86cm, H 110cm). Now saying that, I could so have sized down, (even now after having made a couple of these sets). The only thing stopping me, well I’ve already traced out the size ‘I’ and well, I’m lazy.

Now to the pants, these are not supplied in print form via the physical magazine, however, enter the code and voila they are yours, alas I had left my mag copy at home, and being the eager pattern beaver that I am, I opted to pay the $5 for it. (As I was sitting out the front of office works Newcastle.)

Now comes the huge catastrophe. As I am sure any and all who have printed A4 or A0 patterns are aware, you must check the test square. The Samford pants pattern I printed out as A4, which I detest, and only did so under duress as Newcastle Officeworks at the time was not A0-Ok (see what I did there, gosh, I crack myself up)

So, I sticky taped my little heart out, cut out my gorgeous thrifted floral sheet… and shock horror, the pants, they are enormous. The test square was close, but not spot on, creating much drama. Now I managed to slim those suckers down, and would you believe, they are one of my most worn sets… as pj.s. Disaster avoided.

Fast forward to the next day, after work, I headed into Officeworks Kotara, where the very friendly and knowledgeable assistant, printed, in the correct scale, the Samford set pants. At no charge. (I had also printed off a peppermint cardigan pattern, whose scale was wrong as well.) With the rectified pattern, I was off and running.

I had picked up the very last (on sale) gorgeous shot Japanese cotton floral from Alie Jane, a local fabric artist on Hunter Street specialising in unique handmade goods. Not only does she sew on site, she also stocks fabric. Honestly, Newcastle, in every respect a booming city, lacks much variety in regards to non- quilting fabric supplies. So I am very grateful to this local. Sometimes, a body just wants to feel the fabric.

Well after much adventure, a full Samford Set was sewn. (In the correct scale).

Now I have worn this out fit everywhere, in fact it is my go too. It’s my ‘I must look pulled together and casual at the same time, while being comfortable and chic’. (Well, to me that is anyways)

I’ve worn it to my first bra sewing class.

I wore it when I took our freshly restored 1965 Franklin Regent caravan away for the first time.

I wore it paddle boarding at Salamander Bay whilst away on holidays with the family.

This is one of my fav patterns. I’ve even got another pair to write about, because if there is one thing a self-proclaimed spicy brain person can do. Its repetition.
